Working Boat

2016
mixed media on paper
24 x 20 cm
Toni McDowell’s paintings often depict scenes of boats as a special genre for their grace and beauty. The idyllic setting of Triabunna, a small township on the east coast of Tasmania is a place McDowell frequently revisits. This loosely representational composition depicts a single working boat, most likely a squid boat, painted en plein air. The elements of colour, typically of a restricted colour palette, to build up patterns to form the image convey the Arcadian harmony and majestic beauty of which McDowell views these subjects.
