Coastal scenes have a significant presence throughout Ashley Frost’s works. Inspired by various perspectives across Sydney Harbour and the eastern suburbs, Manly to Middle Head was painted en plein air and captures the transition of light from late afternoon into dusk as seen looking south west to Middle Head with the Sydney CBD in the background. Bodies of water and their modulation of light also provide another dynamic aspect to Frost’s compositions and his deeper fascinations with colour and light at the convergence of day and night.
